Melissa Gilbert has been endorsed by the AFL-CIO in her bid for the 8th District U.S. House seat.
Gilbert’s campaign announced the endorsement Thursday morning.
“Melissa just gets it,” Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber said in a statement. “She understands that raising incomes is good for families, good for Michigan, and good for the nation. And she’ll fight to make sure every child can get a world-class education right here in Michigan.”
The announcement noted Gilbert’s union background as past president of the Screen Actors Guild.
Gilbert, a Democrat, is challenging incumbent Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, for the 8th District seat. The district includes Livingston, Ingham and northern Oakland Counties.
The AFL-CIO is a federation of 56 labor unions, representing an estimated 12.5 million U.S. workers. As such, it is considered the nation’s largest union organization.
