[Howell, MI] – Today, Melissa Gilbert announced that she has earned the support of the Michigan Sierra Club for her commitment to protecting the Great Lakes and Michigan’s natural resources.
Today’s endorsement adds to a growing chorus of local organizations that are backing Melissa’s campaign for Congress.
“The Great Lakes are vital to Michigan’s economy, and protecting them should be one of our top priorities,” said Melissa Gilbert. “I’m proud to have the backing of the Sierra Club and its members in the Eighth District, and I look forward to working with them to make sure our natural resources are preserved for generations to come.”
A report by the University of Michigan shows that the Great Lakes support more than half a million jobs in Michigan in various industries including manufacturing, shipping, tourism, and agriculture.
Melissa is committed to protecting the Great Lakes as Michigan’s economic engine by fighting against proposals in Congress to allow oil and gas drilling beneath the Great Lakes that her opponent, Rep. Mike Bishop, has repeatedly voted to allow. Bishop has also voted against protecting the Great Lakes – which contain 20 percent of the world’s freshwater – against algal blooms that affect the quality of our drinking water.
“Big oil and gas companies have lined Mike Bishop’s pockets for years,” said Mike Berkowitz, Legislative & Political Director of the Sierra Club’s Michigan Chapter. “It’s clear that Bishop is more interested in doing the bidding of the fossil fuel industry, than looking out for the best interests of his constituents. We will knock on every last door, and make every last phone call to help send Melissa to Congress.”
Melissa has been endorsed by the AFL-CIO, UAW, and UFCW. For a full list, please click here.
